Well, after putting it off for too long {well- three years} I went to see {get it} the eye doctor. He said I needed glasses. Don't you hate that? Anyways, I'm going to be feeling better and that will be lovely. My mom and I picked out some pretty hot frames if I do say so myself. That is I think we did. I remember liking them and I remember wanting them but I can't really remember why. I put on like fifty pairs today so I feel like I could have just liked them because that meant I could leave and go get lunch. I'm not really sure. We shall see!
Tonight after work I headed to my grandparents to have dinner and hang with them. I showed my Nana my knitting (she taught me how to knit years ago and then got me started on it again this summer) and then the three of us chatted. They told me stories about my childhood- like when I was 8 or so I sold a glass of water for $5 at a dead end. Oh, yes. Love it.
I then asked my grandpa to tell me about his childhood and where he grew up. They proceeded to tell me stories for the next hour. It was sooo much fun!
My grandpa grew up in Eastern Washington and then moved north and lived in a one room school house for years. His mother was a teacher and he had five kids in his class- imagine that. He joined the Navy at 17 and is basically awesome.
One story he told I want to write down somewhere and what better place then your online diary. We were chatting about wool coats {don't exactly know how that one came up} and he told me about a wool coat that he bought for $15 half off when he was about 16 years old. Let me just tell you he got his money's worth. He got rid of that wool coat when he retired. He said, "It went in and out of style pretty near (which he says 'prinear') 6 times." I loved that. My Nana is quite awesome, as well. She bough a coat too- but it was $30 and she didn't really like it. It was green. :) I don't know what about that story caught my ear but something about it is just so quaint and grand. I don't know.
I don't know what has gotten into me lately but I am so nostalgic. As I ate dinner at their table it made me so incredibly happy to use their silverware. That's the silverware I grew up with and whenever I see that little leaf design on the tips of the spoons I think of our old house. So many things remind me of them... There's something so sweet about spending time there. When I was growing up my family lived in the same house as they did and I can still remember heading downstairs to join my grandpa in the big maroon lazy boy with fig newtons and milk in hand. We would usually watch Law and Order or Murder She Wrote. To this day I can't eat fig newtons without thinking about Grandpa Mercer.
Again, the theme of my life currently: slow down. It was nice to be an old person tonight. I liked it a lot.
I did get a tiny bit of disapproving look from my Grandpa for not checking my oil and driving it practically empty of oil. *sigh* I swear my car recycles that stuff. Any suggestions? I should probably take it in. That's all for now... whoever you are thanks for reading... if you did.
